Laminate Flooring

Wood Flooring Direct laminate floors are a great way to create a modern, sophisticated look without the hassle of maintenance and cost of hardwood floors. There is no need to worry about scratching, wear and tear, and moisture damage because laminate flooring is extremely resistant.

A favourite of homeowners because of its durability and stain resistance, laminate flooring is a synthetic composite made from four layers of materials. Laminate flooring mimics wood, tile, and other surfaces, but is more stain and fade-resistant.

The surface of these floor coverings is made of high-quality, wear-resistant fiberboard or plastic. They are made with a durable, innovative core that adds strength and durability.

One of the biggest advantages of laminate flooring over real wood flooring is that it can appear just as attractive and authentic – yet without the wear-and-tear issues and maintenance problems.

Types of Laminate Flooring

You can choose from a variety of laminate flooring types. There are many types of laminate flooring that are beautiful and cost-effective, including hardwood, slate, and ceramic.

This flooring mimics wood, stone or tile, and is considered by many to be the next big design trend. It consists of layers of fiberboard topped with an image of wood, tile, or stone.

Using laminate flooring, you can easily achieve wood, tile, or stone looks without having to deal with cleaning soiled grout joints. There are no burns, scratches, or heat effects, and the material is very easy to maintain.

It is often mistaken for real engineered hardwood flooring. Engineered wood flooring is made up of real wood plies that have been laminated together. As a contrast, laminate floors are composed of fiberboards with top layers of melamine resins and photographic prints.

Flooring made from laminate can be used anywhere. Due to its resilience, it has become a popular choice for applications below, at, or above grade as a result of its ability to resist humidity and moisture.

There are many types of laminate flooring, each available in many different styles, colours, and textures.

Based on Installation Type

  1. Laminate flooring that requires no glue
Glueless laminate flooring installation involves installing tiles or planks without adhesive. Getting them anchored to the floor requires the right method. Installing them is easy and they are indeed more popular on the market.
  1. Glued laminate flooring
The joints will need to be glued together. While this type of installation will result in a very strong floor once installed, its cost and time will be higher than with a glueless installation.
  1. Pre-glued laminate flooring
Instead of applying glue separately to the planks, these planks are already painted with glue, so all you have to do is snap the planks together.

For some edges, you need to dampen them to activate the glue. So be sure to read the installation instructions carefully before you begin. This type of flooring can also not be messed with since the tongue and grooves are already secured with glue. Furthermore, installation is easy and quick.

  1. Underlayment attached
The glueless planks come with an underlayment for easy installation, so you don’t have to worry about glue as all you need to do is to snap them in place. Locking systems consist of tongues and grooves of a variety of types. Noise is reduced by the underlayment attached.

Based on the Material It Imitates

  1. Wood flooring laminate

Flooring like this is made up of thin layers of solid wood with an upper layer of wood veneer and an acrylic finish that makes it tough and durable. Compared to other laminate options, it has thicker planks. Different wooden designs are available for the models.

With their new technology, manufacturers now offer not only hardwood veneers but also printed types. With solid hardwood, you will not be able to tell the difference. By lightly sanding and refinishing laminate wood flooring after years of usage, laminate wood flooring can be brought back to its former glory.

  1. Plastic laminate flooring

Although not as widely used as wooden laminate, this material can be versatile nonetheless. A laminated plastic floor is manufactured from fibreboard which contains imposed photo images. Plastic laminates come in a variety of styles, so there is plenty of choices. Plastic flooring is not recommended for bathrooms since it retains a lot of moisture.

  1. Stone laminate flooring

Laminate with a stone appearance is designed to mimic the beauty and realism of real stone. For a completely natural-looking floor, this flooring offers rich colours, unique textures, dimensional depth and variations, as well as indents and ridges mimicking natural stone.

  1. Tiles laminate flooring

Laminated tiles are available in planks varying in width from 12 to 16 inches by 3 to 4 feet long, or as individual tiles varying in size from 12 to 24 inches square. Tiles like these look like ceramics.

Based on Texture

Laminate flooring should resemble the material it’s meant to mimic, whether it’s tile, stone, or wood. You should examine the laminates under various light conditions before making your purchase so you can get an idea of how it will look at different times of the day and decide the direction in which the laminates should be installed.

Surfaces with thicker textures are slip-resistant, which is crucial if the floor will be in bathrooms, kitchens, or entryways. Laminate flooring can be subdivided into the following categories based on its texture:

  • Smooth laminate flooring

These tiles are made to look like other tile floor products like ceramic and marble. While ceramic and marble tiles have grooves between each tile, their material is more durable and easier to clean due to their lack of grooves.

  • Embossed laminate flooring

They are made of heat-sensitive polymer materials that are raised in different patterns and can be cut into square blocks or rectangles.

  • Embossed/textured

This is an embossing or all over texture that does not match the grooves of the printed grain. Though not the most realistic, it gives the appearance of natural wood grain.

  • Embossed in Register (EIR):

This type of embossing matches the grooves of the printed grain exactly and produces a very realistic wooden surface.

  • Hand-scraped

Originally available only for engineered or solid hardwood floors, this antiqued finish now adds a unique touch to laminate floors. The process is either done manually or by using pre-existing floorboards.

Based on Floor Construction

1. HPL Flooring (High-Pressure Laminate)

It is a type of construction in which the planks are fused together in a single or two-step process. In the high-end market, high pressure is used on more expensive brands. First, multiple layers will be glued together, then other materials will be fused to them, then glued together to form a plank. Comparatively, this finish is harder and more durable than DPL.

2. DPL Flooring (Direct Pressure Laminate)

In the majority of laminates, the layers are pressed and heated together to form a bond by direct pressure, which assembles the layers together. The cost of manufacturing is reduced because all materials are combined in one step.

Based on Gloss Level

Does your laminate floor come in either a high gloss (fine finish) or low gloss (matte) finish? It’s up to you to decide which look fits your décor or personal tastes best.

Whatever the gloss level, laminate floors don’t exhibit much difference in performance or durability. Surface scratches will be more easily concealed on low-gloss floors than on high-gloss floors.

Based on Pattern

Choosing a laminate floor design can be a challenge due to the wide variety of patterning options available, ranging from thin strips to symmetrical checkerboard parquet.

The following are some of the most common patterns:

  1. Traditional floorboards planks
  2. Thin strip flooring
  3. Wide plank floorboards
  4. Herringbone patterns and chevron pattern

Features of Laminate Flooring

Product line features contribute to differentiating between the different types offered. With laminate flooring, this is certainly true. When choosing laminate flooring, consider the following features:

  • Water-resistant /waterproof
  • Scratch-resistant
  • Noise resistant
  • Easy to install
  • No waxing or polishing needed
  • Okay with radiant floor heating.

Edge Type

You can choose your laminate based on the edge type. There are 3 options

  • Bevelled
  • Pressed
  • Square
